Over the past few weeks, my class has begun taking art outside of the technological realm and started working on sketching assignments outside of class. For me, someone taking Intermediate 2D (advanced visual art pathway) and a very experienced sketcher, this assignment has been relatively easy, but also surprisingly eye-opening. Using the templates and tutorials provided, I have learned a lot more about anatomy and noticed as I went through the activity, I began to do it better and faster. Drawing the same thing repetitively ingrains it into your memory and helps you become a better artist; with practice makes perfect. However, the main importance of these activities is that they prepare us for the game industry. Storyboarding and sketching out your concepts is a huge part of the game development process and is ultimately a key factor in the pre-production phase. It is also important that you improve your drawing abilities because they don't just apply to paper or even drawing in general; they apply to almost everything in the game industry, even if it isn't directly related to drawing. Drawing improves your artistic creativity and vision, a key aspect to becoming a successful game artist or designer. Overall these art activities are conditioning us to become better artists in all aspects and are focusing on our drawing ability, a crucial skill to have in the gaming industry. Summary:

Roblox is one of the largest growing games/platforms, and recently reached over an average of 100 million active players in the last month from just 9 million in February 2016. They’re growing at an exponential rate, passing up many games such as Overwatch, Minecraft, and gaining on League of Legends. It is about time somebody addresses the wide misconceptions about this game, especially to older audiences, allowing it to reach its full potential. First off, Roblox is not just for kids. Roblox is targeted towards all audiences, and has a huge older developer community as well. It is all about finding the right game. Games I have played that seem to be targeted towards older audiences with a much more mature community are some of my favorites such as Phantom Forces and Island Royale. Roblox also allows you to pair up with your friends, overall proving this misconception is only the cause of itself. Roblox is geared towards all ages. Another huge misconception is that Roblox is unoriginal. Most people accuse all Roblox games of being poor copies of mainstream, higher quality, games. This is true in many aspects. However Roblox is free to play and 95% of the games are also. All the games are also interwoven in the same platform with interchangable avatar cosmetics and uses your same account, which is convenient. Roblox is also known to have the best, and original, obbies, simulators, and tycoons so it is not fair to classify all Roblox games based on one faction. Copied games can actually be better in some aspects to their counterparts; Island Royale for example takes after Fortnite, but has many advantages. Some advantages are the greater avatar customability, a less competitive environment making it way more possible to win, and a tight-knit community. It also lacks some of the hated newer Fortnite updates. Overall Roblox games CAN compete with expensive mainstream games and Roblox itself is more of a platfom than a single game. Breaking past the community and game quality stereotypes, you realize Roblox is an amazing tool, market, platform, and community. It provides you with a high end free studio that feeds into a growing platform, and even has a catalog and trading market of valuable items. Roblox also has a wide variety of games, almost anything you can think of, that are often original or even compete with mainstream games. This is a Five-Star worthy platform and deserves to be put up there with other large mainstream games like Fortnite and Minecraft. Summary:

When a company or a college is sorting through applicants, your portfolio is what makes you stand out. The game industry is growing and is super competitive, making it harder to be successful. As discussed in the GameIndustry article "Your game portfolio is your greatest asset", your portfolio is where you show off what you learned and how well you can apply it to the game industry, making you unique from the other applicants; education is worthless if you cannot properly apply it. Although it is important to catch the job recruiters eye with your resume, and convince them why you stand out with your cover letter, your portfolio shows what you bring to the table. While working over this assignment I realized I need to do more to prepare myself for when it is time to apply for college or a job, and start building my portfolio up now if I want to stand out and beat the other thousands of applicants. I went further than creating some new artwork but started on a project. Roblox Studio is great studio and feeds into an amazing platform that gets young teenagers and college students headstarts in the gaming industry, even making many of them self-made millionaires. I began taking initiative in my free time to turn the work I created for this project into parts of a game. These are two of the "maps" I created, in just under a couple hours with no previous experience, showing that if you put in the time and effort you can build your portfolio. Working on a project on your free time sets you apart, and it is important to begin taking initiative starting now if you want to be successful in the gaming industry. Summary:
